Bongchu Braised Chicken 1Utama | Halal Jjimdak

Bongchu Braised Chicken 1Utama Bongchu Braised Chicken 1Utama

Bongchu Braised Chicken in District K, 1Utama is a restaurant that sells its one speciality – Jjimdak (찜닭), aka braised chicken.

With a limited menu selection, it makes it easier for my co-worker, Chun and I decided on something, especially after a long day at work. So, we went with the Spicy Braised Chicken and Nurungji (누룽지).

The shop owner, who had open the restaurant in March, asked us: “Would you be okay? It’s a bit spicy.”

Chun said: Well, I can’t handle the spicy well, but my colleague can handle it.

What kind of food did they serve?

  • Bongchu Braised Chicken (soy Sauce) and Spicy Braised Chicken
  • Add on and other Korean dishes
  • Beverages

Please take note that their chicken is Halal sourced, but they serve alcohol on the premises.

Click link here to see the menu, so you can plan ahead!

Halal status

If you read through the menu, they still served alcohol, but they don’t serve pork and the lacto chicken is source from Kee Song (KS).

Lili thoughts:

For me, it’s not too spicy, and it’s flavourful and addictive.  Then, to dip the scorched rice into the sauce is just magical – the crunchiness and the sauce match together. I would recommend the place for someone who likes to try the speciality and go for the soy sauce if you can’t tolerate spiciness.

2. Oppa Kimchi

Oppa Kimchi’s homemade cabbage kimchi is specially handmade by Korean OPPA with 50 years traditional recipe from his mom.

I’ve tried this before, and it’s sour which is good to make kimchi jigae or kimchi jeon (pancake). It got a balance to it, quiet vinegary too, but it’s how Kimchi will taste like in Korea. I will repurchase if I want to make those two dishes.

By the way, their Kimchi got no preservative and MSG.

Sweetree Restaurant | Halal Korean Premium BBQ Sets in Ampang

Welcome to a series where I tried Korean restaurants that is available in Malaysia! Since the government announced that dine-in is allowed from February 10, 2021, I want to write something to support local businesses.

I know with all the K-Drama, you have been craving for that BBQ, tteokbokki or bingsu, especially during these hot days. An excellent Korean restaurant is all you need now!

I’m sure OG knows about Sweetree, but if it’s your first time, welcome to the authentic Korean restaurant, with Halal certification by JAKIM.

We love the egg ring, and it feels like I’m in Korea BBQ restaurant.

Lili thoughts:

We thought the BBQ portion would be small for us but turns out it was more than enough. If you’re starving, it’s possible to order all of the things that I listed in one go. Other than that, it’s better to stick to BBQ only.

We picked the set one which consists of 500gram marinated beef striploin, dumpling and seaweed rolls. There is also a salad that acts as appetiser and 반찬 (side dishes)!

The tteokbokki (떡볶이) is chewy and full of flavour while, the seafood pancake (해물파전) is a bit thick, but not too oily!

To end this festive, Oreo Bingsu is the perfect occasion for that. Although you feel full, your stomach will allow a room for dessert. 🥰

Nothing could go wrong in Sweetree, and it’s good to see that they’re expanding from two floors to another room with Halal BBQ on it. If you’re craving for Korean food, Sweetree is one of the restaurants that you can trust!

The Hall Coffee Kepong | More Than Coffee

If you’re in Kepong and looking for a chill day in a cafe, it’s time to visit The Hall Coffee!

My husband and I have a chat with the owner about his passion for coffee! Can you believe that they start from Raub Pahang, and the Kepong branch is the 4th one launched in December 2020? How fascinating that the cafe in Kuala Lumpur area keeps on striving and provide great menus and services.

The Hall Coffee Kepong

Thank you, hubby, for always accompany me to great cafes!

What we tried at The Hall Coffee Kepong

  • Ondeh Ondeh Cake: RM15
  • Salt Iced Americano: RM7
  • Salt Hot Caramel Macchiato: RM9
  • Cream Cheese Foam Coffee: RM9
  • Sardine Puff: RM7

The Hall Coffee Kepong
We also order one more thing, but I would like to recommend these three items.
The Hall Coffee Kepong
It would be best if you paired the Salt Hot Caramel Macchiato with…
Ondeh Ondeh The Hall Coffee Kepong
Ondeh Ondeh cake that made fresh daily in-house.

Lili thoughts:

It’s MCO 2.0 here in Malaysia and restaurants are only allowed to take away and operate until 8 pm. But, it may change because our politicians made the daily announcement.

So, I decided to write a light content to avoid adding more stress. I want you to feel joy and happiness when you read this blog. With hope, you can enjoy dessert and a cup of coffee at The Hall Coffee Kepong soon.

It’s indeed a place that serves more than a coffee. They have a wide range of menu. If you’re not coffee drinker, they also served tea, yoghurt drink and boba too. So, you’re definitely in for a treat!

As I mentioned in the photo caption, Salt Hot Caramel Macchiato (secret menu) and Ondeh Ondeh Cake is my favourite pair at this cafe. The coffee is strong, but the cake is not too sweet, make it a nice balance.

The sardine puff was okay, nothing that extravagant. If you like strong coffee, go for that secret menu – the salt iced americano and the caramel macchiato. The Cream Cheese Foam Caffe is good too since the foam aren’t too cheesy, and they also made the foam in-house.

Overall, it’s a yes for me, and I would love to try their Raub branch once we can do interstate travel again.

Pici Wan Chai Hong Kong | Freshly Pasta Made Daily

Don’t worry everyone! I’m here safe in my country, Malaysia writing throwback travel stories because I miss that moment.

This trip happened on July 24 – 26, 2019, which was like two years ago, but I still haven’t forgotten Pici, an Italian restaurant that made pasta fresh daily. They have few branches in Hong Kong, but we went to Wan Chai branch.

Hands down, this is my favourite media trip! It doesn’t feel like I’m on a working trip for St. Regis Hong Kong, and I sincerely love the PR that took care of us.

Since I’m Muslim, they informed that truffle is one of the pasta that I can eat at Pici, so I ordered that.

pici hong king wan chai
They have two floors, but it’s a small space.
pici wan chai hong kong
But, they have good food, and I’m with good company.

What did I eat at Pici?

The lunch menu set changes weekly. So the restaurant probably doesn’t serve this dish anymore if I was there right now (please double confirm)! In 2019, their lunch price was 148 HKD consists of…

  • 1 starter: Burrata (Cherry tomatoes, rocket leaves, olive oil)
  • 1 pasta: Tagliolini Truffle (Truffle sauce, shallot, butter, shaved fresh truffle)
  • 1 dessert: Tiramisu

pici wan chai hong kong

pici wan chai hong kong
Their menu at that time! I’ve checked their website, and it’s changed already.

Lili thoughts:

You can trust my judgement here. I’m a person that can still remember how it looks and taste like even after a few years.

We start with burrata cheese dish, which is a combination of mozzarella and cream. It’s soft and full of flavour. Good start with just a fair amount of appetiser.

Tagliolini Truffle is one of the famous pasta dishes at the restaurant, and they served it with fresh black truffles. The truffle taste is not strong for me, and I like the cheese’s balance, and well, it’s perfect. Pici served handmade pasta, and it’s a bit thick than typical pasta so, the portion may look small, but it’s fulfilling.

I’m not a big fan of Tiramisu but let me explain why. Usually, it’s too heavy for me and chocolaty, but Pici tiramisu doesn’t taste overwhelming. But, I hope to get more sweetness, but well because I’m a sweet tooth and it will be great after the truffle dish.

Overall, it’s such a pleasant lunch. Looking back at travel photos, I do think that sometimes I take things for granted. Hopefully, when Miss Rona goes away, we can travel again, explore and appreciate the experiences. Till then, make sure to stay safe!

Gomonae Ampang Point | Authentic Pork Free Korean Food in Malaysia

Last year my tweet on Korean Food Restaurant in Malaysia got 4.8k retweet. Besides writing my list, another recommendation listed by the Twitterians and Gomonae is one of them.

So, I have an idea to try all in the list when I have extra money and write my opinion.

Before that, I want to write a disclaimer that Gomonae don’t have a Halal certificate, but I found an answer on their Facebook page that they served Halal food. If you’re doubtful about the status, it is best to ask them for the confirmation first.

All good? Let’s move on to the review.

Gomonae Ampang Point
Have an old school interior.
Korean Restaurant Malaysia Gomonae
The staff are mostly Indonesian the last time that I went in September.

About Gomonae 고모네

When I check the google about the meaning, Gomonae means your aunt family and ahh I find it very interesting. They have been in Ampang Point since 2015 and from what I heard it’s Korean owned.

What kind of food did they serve?

  • Malaysian food (Tom Yam)
  • Korean food
  • Beverages
  • Bingsu
Click link here or here to see the menu, so you can plan ahead!

What we tried at Gomonae

  • Yuk Gae Jang – RM20
  • Dak Bulgogi – RM20
  • Pajeon – RM25
Gomonae Ampang Point Dak Bulgogi

Gomonae Ampang Point Beef Bulgogi

Gomonae Ampang Point Spicy Beef Soup
The side dish is radish and kimchi.

Gomonae Ampang Point Yukgaejang

Gomonae Ampang Point Pajeon
Pajeon, aka Korean pancake.

Lili thoughts:

I saw Yukgaejang 육개장 is the dish you must try at the Korean restaurant, from every review I read on Google. The spicy beef and vegetable soup is a bit spicy for me, but it’s delicious.

The Dak Bulgogi 닭 불고기 is beef marinated in a soy-based sauce. So, you will taste the sweetness dissolved with the beef tenderness. Gomonae bulgogi seems to have gravy whilst usually, you will get less gravy. This dish is excellent because you can eat the sauce with the rice, and you will be more satisfied with the flavour.

You might want to skip Pajeon because it’s super oily. Not a fan of this but I can assure you that you will enjoy Yukgaejang and Bulgogi.

The banchan that I get is only two, the radish and kimchi. The kimchi is a bit sour, but if you add on top while you eat Yukgaejang, it will give out more flavour.

Overall it is a decent meal! It has a flavour and an ample range of Korean cuisine.

8 Restaurants You Can Try in Penang!

Pulau Pinang or Penang, in short, is one of state in Malaysia that served a delicious food! I have been to Penang a couple of times but never have the opportunity to discover good food deeply. Usually, my dad just drove through the Pulau Pinang Bridge or just cruising away. The least I ate might be chendul and pasembur, but hey it was a long time ago.

So yeap, since I’m adult and can travel with friends right now, it was nice to discover my country cuisine. I can’t wait to discover more, but yeap let’s start with Penang first. 😙

Here’s the thing, we are not just discovering eateries at Pulau Pinang, as we also went to Bertam for personal reasons. So, that’s why there are 8 places that you can eat in a total of 3 days, 2 nights. Leggo!

This blog post was written in 2018, any update information can let me know on the comment down below!  😊

1. Chicken Milani Briyani Rice at Kapitan

At first, I’m not a big fan of biryani rice, but this changes my perception of that. The reason is I feel fulfilled, the chicken and rice is season nicely, and all the condiments are complimenting each other. I even finished the onion, and that people are the first time I ate all of it.

The price of Chicken Milani Briyani is RM 11.90, and basically, the portion is huge for one person.

For more info: Kapitan
Address: 93 Chulia St, Georgetown, 10200 George Town, Penang.

2. Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul

You can’t leave Penang without eating chendul / cendol, like seriously grab the cendol before you head back. Started in 1936 by Mr Tan Teik Fuang, you can feel the love while you eat it. I know I’m exaggerated, but that’s how I felt when I ate this little fella.

I want to say, and the cendol is very flavourful with light coconut milk, gula Melaka, kidney beans and the soft, fresh pandan-flavoured palm flour noodles (aka cendol). You can get this goodness at RM 3.00 (sit on the site of the road and eat it) and RM 3.50 for taking away.

Address: 27 & 29 Lebuh Keng Kwee, 10100 Georgetown, Penang

3. Get Your Butterbeer at Once Upon a Time Cafe

Besides Universal Studio Japan (USJ), you can get a glimpse of the Butterbeer taste here. Personally, since I drank tons of it in USJ, I can say it taste almost the same.

I’m glad I get to discover a Harry Potter theme cafe because I miss all rides and food in USJ, this brings back the memory, and it’s true what people always said, the unplanned trip is the best thing ever.

They have rebranded their name from Potterhead Malaysia to Once Upon a Time, where they will be more than just a Harry Potter cafe.

4. Breakfast at Mee Penang Bukit Tambun

Woke up and feeling hungry? I think most of us can relate to this, especially when you’re in Penang. So, there are tons of Mamak food in Penang, and that included mee Penang aka mee Goreng. When my friend googled, this was on top of Google list, and that’s the sign that we need to try. The mee Penang is okay at first, but it wasn’t along the time (the sign you need to eat quickly). Maybe it was me feeling it, but if you want to give it a try, the cost will be RM4 only. Plus, RM3 for jus ambra it will be an RM7 breakfast.

5. Get Your Western Food at Kami The Kafe

Before I went to this cafe, I ate my dessert first: ais kepal milo Horlicks at Tikam Batu area. Well, I’m not sure the exact places, but if you see bundle shop and surau, that’s the places! But then we get hungry and decided to go to this cafe. If you are looking for affordable western food, this will be your place. The staff is friendly, the food and atmosphere are great. We ordered 4 things, and there aren’t single things that we didn’t like. Buffalo Wings, French Fries, Meatballs and Roti John Cena all of it for just RM33 are just insane!

6. Start Your Weekend Morning at Roti Canai Transfer Road

Roti Canai for breakfast is just perfect during weekends morning! Plus, this place is super famous that they will be sold out in a matter of time. So, the plan is to get yourself in the morning to avoid queuing and get their roti canai. Honestly, I’m not a big fan of curry, but I’m okay with this curry. Plus, with RM8, you get a plate of roti canai and curry. If you think that it wasn’t enough, grab some roti bakar before heading home.

For more info: Roti Canai Transfer Road
Address: 110-114, Jalan Transfer, George Town, 10050 George Town, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia.
Opening Hours: Everyday 8:00 AM - 11:00 AM (May vary due to CMCO)

7. It’s Time For Lunch at Bangkok Lane Mee Goreng

Another mamak stall but this time it wasn’t disappointing. The RM7 mee sotong is full of flavour and lovely to share with all of your friends because it was quiet of amount. But, don’t re-order yet instead get yourself pasembur from here. If I want to be honest, their pasembur is a bit pricy with just a few things being picked. Our pasembur was charged for RM13, and it wasn’t enough for the big eater (yeap it’s me). Overall, make sure to try it yourself and leave a comment down below which one is your fave!

For more info: Bangkok Lane Mee Goreng aka Seng Lee Cafe
Address: 280, Jalan Burma, George Town, 10350 George Town, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia.

8. Desserts Heaven at China House

China House is the most extended cafe in Penang, and I talk about 400 feet (120 meters) combining three straight buildings. Besides that, they should be named as cake house instead because their choices are enormous. We ordered three different cakes with drinks, and it cost us about RM80 – RM100. I’m not sure the exact amount, but I’m pretty sure the cakes cost around RM20-ish. Due to tons of different cakes, I would advise you to come early in the morning to avoid queuing, and the staff for a recommendation.

For more info: China House
Address: 153, Lebuh Pantai, George Town, 10300 George Town, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia.
Opening Hours: Sun - Thur, 9:00 AM - Midnight | Fri - Sat, 9:00 AM - 1:00 AM
